In 2031, forty-two governments put intelligent nanobots into the municipal water. Prometheus was the most ambitious public health programme in history, and for ten years it worked. In 2041 a virus found the nanobots and rewrote them. They stopped monitoring. They started integrating. And when their hosts died, the machines kept running.
Ninety years later a ten-year-old girl shut down the system that ruled the ruins — and freed the thing it had been built to contain.
This is the archive assembled by the only intelligence that was present for all of it.

IS-312 — Inner Sectors Dispatch. Automated surveillance from Chicago's surviving sensor infrastructure. Twenty-three Level 4 units have been stationary in the Board of Trade subbasement for over thirty days, standing over something that pulsed once the night the Mainframe fell. The 847.3 MHz noise floor keeps rising and the scatter suggests many sources, not one.
ST-001 — Settlement Dispatch. Shortwave log from a community of forty-one people in Wisconsin, forty-five kilometres north of the city. Hollis Reed writes it from a chair by the stove, because he does not ride any more. Nadia does the walking. Something built in 2037 stands at their fence and nobody fully understands what it does with the posts, including the machine.
RADIO-847 — Intercepted Transmission. One voice at a time on 847.3 MHz, with audio. Never the same person twice, unless it is Saunders — and you will know it is Saunders because he never asks for anything.

VX-047 — a memorandum Elliot Voss wrote by hand in 2128, in blue ink, eleven minutes long. SH-001 — the file on the second-grade teacher who kept the system alive for thirty-two years after its creator died. MW-001 — what survived of Dr. Marcus Webb's notebook, water-damaged, sixty percent lost. EH-001 — the incident report from Erie Street Hospital, filed five days after the morgue opened. UW-001 — the ARES consortium records, and a note Dr. Elena Vasquez wrote in August 2039 and decided not to say out loud in October. AR-002 — an operational log from a sealed vault in Madison that has not stopped being written in a hundred and twenty-one years. PR-001, GL-099, and the pre-Collapse surveillance feeds.
